This year’s championships completed another great high school baseball season in Colorado, though these games – just like the playoffs and season leading up to them – were also delayed, rescheduled and moved to accommodate for rain and lightning. Nevertheless, it was an eventful final week of the high school season.
In the 5A championship game, the #15 seed Valor Christian Eagles completed a 4-0 victory over Cherokee Trail for the school’s first 5A title. The Eagles won their final 16 games on the season in an impressive run that spanned the last several weeks leading through the playoffs and to the title. Senior Hunter Smith was the winning pitcher who cruised to nearly pitch a complete game, only giving way to Zach Eigenbrod for the final out. Valor won the 4A title from 2016-2018.
In 4A, Severance topped Golden in a 1-0 pitchers’ duel played at CSU-Pueblo, stranding the tying run at third in the final inning. The Silver Knights came up ‘golden’ in just their fourth year of existence finishing the season with a 24-6 overall record, while Golden finished with an impressive 25-7 overall record.
The 3A title game finished as perhaps the most noteworthy for a few different reasons. Eaton’s 13-3 victory capped a perfect 29-0 record and marking 41 straight wins dating back to last year. Eaton’s state title is not only their third in a row (these Seniors won each state title they competed for as the 2020 season was canceled due to COVID), but also completes a school sweep in baseball and softball after the Eaton softball team won the state championship in the fall. With several notable players slated to play beyond high school. Eaton’s unquestioned star is Walker Martin who was named the Gatorade Colorado Baseball Player of the Year and led the entire nation in home runs with 20 and is a top prospect for the upcoming MLB Draft. Martin was also the starting quarterback for Eaton’s state championship-winning football team.
Denver Christian came away with a 5-3 win over Limon for the 2A title played in Pueblo. The Limon Badgers were back-to-back defending championships but Denver Christian’s win is the first for the school since 2013.
In 1A, the Haxtun Fightin’ Bulldogs defeated Flatirons Academy 19-7 at All-Star Park for their first ever baseball title in the school’s history.
Shoutout to HitStreak’s own Ty Jacobs who is the assistant coach at Rock Canyon. The Jaguars finished third in state after falling 10-9 in the semifinals to Cherokee Trail. At HitStreak, we are proud to have had several players and teams train at our facility this past spring including Rock Canyon, Regis Jesuit (seeded #3 in 5A), Valor Christian and more.
Congrats to all the players, coaches and families on a wonderful (and often wet!) spring season and best of luck to all the graduating seniors as they continue forward in their academic and athletic careers.
